FFilmation editor released ( Fri 14 Nov 2008 )

Hooraay !!

Finally the editor is at beta stage. I am very happy with it. Still it “only” edits scenes, not definition files, but it will eventually. I’ve managed to chop together an AIR installation process from the right sidebar. Easy easy easy.

This is a first release so bear with me if it has lots of bugs. I have spent hundreds of hours with this thing, and I’ve been careful with the details, but still I bet it will crash on you sooner or later. The good news is that it features a selfupdate system, so when a new version is released the application will update itself.

All feeback will be welcome.

Known bug: changing a light’s size in the editor does not show on screen. But the change does happen so if you save and load the new light will be there.

In the next few days I will release the engine 1.3.1(mainly the one I compiled the editor with) and updated examples, justa  little more patience.

Also you will notice the donation icon to the right: several people have expressed their wish to donate something, so I thought I could seize the small wave of euphoria that might come from the editor release and see If I can get some extra christmas presents :). However I’m not in this for the money and will continue to support this project regardless of how the donations turn out.

That’s it. Enjoy the editor.

Broken examples ( Mon 10 Nov 2008 )

It seems that the examples currently available for download are broken. Several users have emailed me on this matter.
In a few days I’ll be updating a lot of content, including the sene editor, a new engine release ( 1.3.1, mainly the same stuff of 1.3 but with lots of bugfixes and internal improvements ). I’ll [...]

FFilmation 1.3 important performance patch ( Tue 4 Nov 2008 )

This is only for users of the official 1.3 release. If you keep up to date with SVN you will already have this.
So I was building the scene editor and had this fullscreen canvas that you can drag around like in Photoshop ( hold SPACE and drag ). Performance was very very poor. And I [...]

FFilmation Editor progress update ( Tue 28 Oct 2008 )

Progress in the editor itself has been slow due to some unexpected problems with Adobe AIR, mostly the nightmare I went through to get the external assets loaded into the application’s security domain.
Also, I have spent lots of time rebuilding the scene initialization process, reorganizing and splitting it into several classes that now can be [...]

The FFilmation Editor is on the way ( Thu 9 Oct 2008 )

I think the engine has come to a point where it is robust enought to build something with it ( I know of people already doing it ). However, in order to make it a viable option for real developers with tight deadlines a WYSIWYG editor is mandatory. I myself get bored after several ours [...]

FFilmation 1.3 released ! ( Sun 21 Sep 2008 )

This is a big release: It includes stuff I was planning to have so long ago and also a new internal structure, cleaner and easier to understand and extend, that was very much needed. I have updated everything: examples, the ffilmation basepack, the docs and the demo downloads.
Enjoy !
Here are some highlights.

New internal structure for [...]

Look at those ricochets ! ( Wed 17 Sep 2008 )

The engine now includes with two bullet renderers which support custom ricochets. Check the demo.
I must say I’m very proud of the bullet engine.

Blondie can shoot ( Wed 27 Aug 2008 )

I have updated SVN with the latest version, which is very similar to what version 1.3 will have. For convenience the mynameisponcho classes are now part of the trunk. This ensures that you are always up to date and your version of the demo always compiles.
The online demo is updated. The most significant improvement is [...]

A new release is on the way ( Thu 21 Aug 2008 )

Just a quick post to list some of the changes/additions that will be part of v1.3:

New internal structure for the engine (99% backwards compatible ).
Internal methods are reorganized per functionality. No longer the element classes have collision methods, visibility methods, etc, etc. Now elements only contain their properties and you have a collisionSolver, a visibilitySolver, [...]

Worth mentioning iso engine ( Fri 1 Aug 2008 )

If this was a business, someone would advise me against linking to something that could be considered a “competitor”. However, I’m not competing with anybody so…
Openspace looks like a very complete solution that seems focused at online communities and already integrates server-side technology. Depending on your specific needs i think it is well worth considering.
Still, [...]
