I need some advice ( Tue 24 Mar 2009 )

First of all this is not FFilmation related but please don’t stop reading yet. I need advice in two technical issues I’m facing in my daytime job, and I thought I might ask the community here:

Advice 1: First of all we are designing a website for a client where the user will be able to use his webcam to send a number of video streams into a server, and then do some custom editing in a sort of video jukebox. Part of my job is to decide the server technology to use, and them program the interaction flash-server-flash. I’ve been reading around and it seems that is FMS versus Red5, but I have no experience in the field. It would be nice If anyone who has dealt with this in the past could advice me which technology use. Money is not an issue ( as long as it is reasonable ) but the client has high expectations so I need to make sure that the system works nice and smooth.

Advice 2: I’m looking for a hosting service with root access where I can install a SmartFox server. This is for a realtime application where low latency times are crucial. The server won’t be dealing with lots of traffic and concurrent users, but those online will need “pings” as low as possible.  Also in this case quality is more important than price, as long is it also reasonable. This will have world-wide connections so I’m most interested in providers that have proven to work great all over the planet.

Thank you everybody in advance !

  1. I get the following ping from my linux provider (root access to a linux VM, admin console to change distro, etc)

    brindy$ ping brindy.vm.bytemark.co.uk
    PING brindy.vm.bytemark.co.uk (80.68.94.40): 56 data bytes
    64 bytes from 80.68.94.40: icmp_seq=0 ttl=54 time=36.096 ms

But I am based in the UK, so that might not be the case everywhere.

  2. Red5 has serious performance problem when publish live stream with audio, but when you just publish video stream, it’s works fine. I have tested about 1000+ client connect to a Red5 server at the same time, everything’s all right. But if with audio, 200+ client can kill the server. Any way, If money is not a problem, FMS is the best choice. Beside, maybe you can also have a look about wowzamedia, it’s more cheaper than FMS and more powerful than Red5.

I’m not good at English, but I’m glad if I can help you. My email is silenceyese@yahoo.com.cn, you can contact to me if you need.

  3. If your looking for full control of FMS, I recommend influxis.com. I’ve used internap and stream uk in the past and both have ticked me off in the past!! Influxis just worked for me.

  4. I agree with Jacky, if money is not problem, you should buy FMS, but Red5 is not a bad solution. With current version (0.8 RC2), it is stable enough for a normal streaming application that can handle about more than 500+ concurrent clients.

  5. slicehost.com

I have a 512KB slice personally and we also use this professionally in our office. Awesome reliability, slice setup time is < 1 minute, full root access. Great solid solution.
